Professor Slim TOUNSI

Professor Slim TOUNSI is a distinguished scholar and expert in Biological Engineering, currently serving as the General Director of the Centre of Biotechnology of Sfax (CBS), Tunisia, a position he has held since 2019. Prior to this, he was the Head of the Biopesticides Laboratory at CBS (2009–2019). He also serves as President of the CBS Scientific Council, Member of the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Sciences of Sfax, and Member of the International Society of Organic Agriculture Research (ISOFAR). Additionally, he is part of the Scientific Councils of two Tunisian institutions: the Olive Tree Institute and the Regional Research Centre in Horticulture and Organic Agriculture.
Professor TOUNSI earned his first Ph.D. in Biological Engineering from the Engineering School of Sfax (2002) and a second Ph.D. in Biological Sciences and Biotechnology from the Higher Institute of Biotechnology of Monastir (2006). In 2002–2003, he worked as a visiting researcher at the Laboratory of Comparative Pathogenesis, University of Paris XI (France), supported by a postdoctoral fellowship from CNRS-France.
His current research focuses on the study and production of microbial and plant-based biopesticides (biofungicides, bioinsecticides, and antibiotics) for the control of fungal, bacterial, and insect pathogens. Professor TOUNSI has authored over 100 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and contributed to the development of eight national patents.
He has been Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator in numerous national and international collaborative projects, including Horizon Europe, H2020, ARIMNet, ERANETMED, and COST programs. His innovative research has been recognized with several distinctions, including the Regional Award for Innovative Projects (PASRI-ANPR, 2014), the Second Prize of Univenture/Wiki Start-Up (2015), and the Presidential Award for Best Laboratory in Tunisia (2018).
